We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Construction Project Engineer to support field operations during the construction of medium-density affordable housing projects across California. This role will work directly on active construction sites under the supervision of the Project Manager and Superintendent, providing technical, administrative, and logistical support to ensure timely, high-quality, and cost-effective project delivery. The Project Engineer will play a key role within our vertically integrated team, coordinating between field crews, subcontractors, consultants, and the development team.

Minimum experience:

This role includes:
- Field Coordination & Project Support:
- Assist in daily site operations, including subcontractor coordination, logistics planning, and quality control.
- Monitor and track construction progress, materials deliveries, and compliance with project schedules.
- Conduct field walks and inspections with Superintendent and QA/QC personnel.
- Document Control & Reporting:
- Manage construction documentation including RFIs, submittals, daily reports, meeting minutes, and punch lists.
- Ensure accurate distribution of updated drawings, specifications, and change directives to field staff and subcontractors.
- Maintain Procore or equivalent project management system with up-to-date logs and records.
- Procurement & Scheduling:
- Coordinate with the office team to ensure timely procurement and delivery of materials and equipment.
- Assist with updating look-ahead schedules and tracking critical path items with input from the Superintendent and PM.
- Cost Tracking & Change Management:
- Support the processing of change orders, field tickets, and subcontractor invoicing.
- Verify quantities and materials used against budgets and purchase orders.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Help enforce site safety protocols and maintain OSHA compliance.
- Ensure construction activities comply with state and local building codes, environmental regulations, and affordable housing program requirements.

If the following describes you, we want to hear from you:
- Thorough understanding of building systems, sequencing, and construction means and methods across residential projects, and safety regulations (OSHA certification required).
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and contracts.
- Familiarity with construction schedules (CPM, Gantt), project phasing, and cost tracking, and working knowledge of subcontracts, scopes of work, change orders, and progress billing.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
- Intermediate to advanced computer literacy, with a thorough understanding of Google Workspace and MS Office, as well as familiarity with project management and construction software (e.g. Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam, MS Project, or similar).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills (in English), allowing for clear and succinct communication in a variety of settings (phone, video, in-person, email), and with people of various backgrounds and levels, both internally and externally.
- Ability to successfully interface and build strong cross-functional relationships with both internal team members and external partners, finding common ground and solving problems for the good of all.
- Detail-oriented mindset to ensure compliance with plans, specs, and workmanship standards.
- Ability to negotiate with vendors and subcontractors on pricing, scope changes, and timelines.
- Familiarity with California building codes, zoning, and permitting processes.
- Ability to walk stand and move around on large construction sites for extended periods of time, navigating uneven terrain, mud, gravel, or incomplete flooring.
- Ability and willingness to work on-site full-time at project locations in California.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, or scaffolding to access elevated areas (depending on the site).
Minimum experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of field-based experience working on multifamily or commercial construction projects (internships included).
- Familiarity with affordable housing construction preferred; exposure to LIHTC or public funding requirements is a plus.
- OSHA 30 certification (or ability to obtain within the first 30 days).
- Experience with Prevailing Wage documentation and public agency reporting.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
